Google is known to have suffered from stocks rates decrease in the beginning of 2009. The analysts claim the company to have made numerous operations mistakes. Some claim them to be non – systematic with project portfolio management. Some claim the company of unnecessary embezzlement. Some say the company to have succeeded only because of the general economic growth and the company unique position as the market pioneer and leader.
Anyway, the situation is as it is and the company is now entitled to cut operations costs. The first costs optimization targeted HR field. For years the company was known as the best company in the world to work for. Unique corporate culture, very special terms of work, lucrative compensation packages, flexible schedules.
First, the company cut some functions in the company. It was aimed to cut compensations expenses that constituted one of the most considerable cost sections. To do that Google dismissed numbers of distanced workers. Most of the functions fulfilled by the distanced specialists were given to the office staff. In the meanwhile, the office staff was as well reduced. Firstly, the HR department. The company does not foresee the dramatic growth and will not be recruiting more people as massively as before. So, the recruitment specialists are no more necessary. At least, not that many. The remaining recruitment specialists will have targets to close all of the vacancies by their own, with no expenses for external providers.
Second, the company reduced some office staff who had supportive functions and can no influence income generation. Yet, most key specialists and top-performers are promised to be kept in the company. The company was as well severely criticized for cutting some of the compensation costs. Yet, they seem very funny compared to the actions of another employers’ actions. E.g., Google employees are not allowed to take their meals home any more and treat their guests. The meals variety is not that great any more. Dinner and supper will last not for 2 hours, but for 90 minutes (when in many cases office staff in New York hardly find 60 minutes for their meal)…
